Motorists are being advised to expect possible delays on Cambridge Road as work continues on the Takitimu Northern Link project.

Members of the public have contacted SunLive saying the Tauranga road was closed without warning on Monday afternoon, prompting what they say was big traffic delays.

But Jo Wilton, Regional Manager Waikato and Bay of Plenty - Transport Services - Infrastructure Delivery for Waka Kotahi Transport Agency, says this was not entirely the case.

Jo says Cambridge Road was not closed yesterday, but contractors were running a three way Stop/Go at the intersection of Moffat Road and Cambridge Road for service relocation work, stump-grinding and hydro-vacing.

'At around 2pm-2.30pm a queue of traffic developed at the Tauriko end. Traffic management was removed by 3pm and contractors report that traffic was back to normal flow by 3.15pm.

'CCTV shows that there was a period of queueing between 4.24pm and 4.28pm back from the roundabout in Tauriko, which is attributed to ordinary peak queueing in this location at this time of the day.”

Jo says the work on Cambridge Road is part of the Bay of Plenty's biggest roading project, the Takitimu North Link Stage One.

Road users can learn more information about the project and subscribe to updates here.

'There will be activity in this area for some time. The project team endeavours to keep disruption to a minimum, using traffic management during off-peak times whenever possible.

'We thank road users for their patience while we build this important road for the region.”

I moved to Tauranga and couldn't not believe the Cambridge road and SH29 was not a priority . Now with so much more traffic it's totally unbelievable it continues and still not sure if it will be fixed ? Poor drivers coming out of Cambridge road to go towards the Kaimai rely on on good will to be let out most of the time
