One person has died following a single-vehicle crash near Taupō.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Western Bay Road, Waihaha, about 12.50pm on Wednesday.

In a statement released overnight, police confirmed one person died after the crash.

Another person was airlifted to hospital with critical injuries, says a police spokesperson.

"The road has reopened and the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation."
