Tauranga-Waihī works to cause traffic delays

Motorists are advised to plan for delays between Waihī and Tauranga as Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors get back onto the network to repair, reseal and improve safety along the corridor.

There is a large volume of work underway along State Highway 2 and, depending on traffic volumes, delays of 30 to 45 minutes can be expected.

'At the Tauranga end of SH2 north, we have a 500m section of Takitimu Drive under the Waihī Road overbridge which is undergoing repairs and a drainage upgrade,” explains Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Bay of Plenty system manager Roger Brady.

'The road is reduced to one lane in each direction until approximately the end of January, and the Waihī Road/Takitimu Drive on-ramp and off-ramp (Koromiko Street) will remain closed during the works, with detours in place”

Roger says he understands this work will be frustrating for road users but says this is the optimum time for works to commence.

'This is the safest and most efficient way to complete these important works,” says Roger.

'It is also the best time to do this, before school goes back, and as we make the most of the summer weather.

'We also have a number of resurfacing works this week which will be undertaken at night between 7pm and 5am. These will operate under Stop/Go traffic management and a 30km/h temporary speed limit.

Safety improvement works at SH2 Waihī to Ōmokoroa have also recommenced at four sites, one of which includes tree felling.

'Please follow temporary speed limits to keep yourselves, other motorists and our road workers safe.”

For at least 24 hours after the sites are sealed, and before being swept, they continue to operate under a reduced temporary speed limit while vehicles travel over the seal and help ‘bed in' the chip. Delays of 30 to 45 minutes may be expected following this work.

snails make more headway than waka kotahi, they should be paying for our gas to compensate for our lost road taxes, car maintenance, & fuel tax.
