Matamata crash: two children still critical

One of five children in a stolen car that crashed on a country road between Matamata and Morrinsville has been discharged from hospital – but two of his companions remain in a critical condition.

And police are staying mum on whether any of the parents or caregivers of the five youngsters in the Nissan Tiida that veered off the road at speed and flipped into a ditch will be charged in connection to the incident.

The crash happened shortly before midnight on Monday on Morrinsville-Walton Rd. Five children aged between 10 and 13 were in the car. At least three were thrown from the vehicle in the impact.

All were helicoptered or taken by ambulance to Waikato Hospital. One remains in a critical condition in that hospital, while another also still in a critical condition, was transferred to Auckland's Starship Hospital on Monday.

Two are now in a stable condition, while the fifth child has been discharged.

A police spokeswoman said on Thursday that while inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing, 'it would not be appropriate to speculate on if charges will be laid, and for privacy reasons we won't be commenting on the circumstances of the children”.

Police earlier confirmed the Tiida had also apparently been used in a smash-and-grab burglary in a Vape shop in Matamata earlier on Monday evening.

Witnesses to the crash described it as a 'horrific” scene.
