The Covid-19 outbreak added 34 new cases in Auckland over the weekend, prompting calls for a new approach to stop the Delta variant circulating in the community.

Epidemiologist Michael Baker says New Zealand is "tantalisingly close" to shutting down the outbreak, which is now limited to a few difficult chains of transmission.

He says it's time for a last major push, with a more intensive campaign including door-to-door surveillance testing in areas where the virus is trying to settle in.

Pasifika health provider The Fono runs some in-home testing already, and says it works well.

Meanwhile, a new survey of New Zealanders shows general support for lockdowns to eliminate Covid-19, but for many people that willingness only extends to when the vaccination target has been reached.
