Weather warning issued for BOP

A severe weather warning is in place for the Bay of Plenty.

The MetService is forecasting heavy rain for parts of central and northern New Zealand.

'A large low is forecast to remain slow-moving over the Tasman Sea while associated fronts move slowly eastwards across central and northern New Zealand through overnight Saturday.

'This weather system is expected to bring periods of heavy northerly rain to many places.

'People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any changes are made to the Watches or Warnings, or further areas are added.”

Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.

Area: The ranges of Bay Of Plenty east of Whakatane and Gisborne north of Tokomaru Bay

Valid: 24 hours from 4am Saturday to 4am Sunday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Expect 100 to 130 mm of rain to accumulate. Peak rates of 15 to 25mm/h, especially overnight Saturday.

Area: Mount Taranaki
Valid: 18 hours from 9am Friday to 3am Saturday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Expect 100 to 150mm of rain to accumulate. Peak rates of 10 to 20mm/h, especially from Friday evening.
Please note, the remainder of northern Taranaki remains under a Watch for heavy rain.

Area: Nelson west of Motueka

Valid: 16 hours from 9am Friday to 1am Saturday
Forecast: Periods of heavy northerly rain. Expect a further 80 to 100mm of rain to accumulate on top of what has already fallen on the ranges, with lesser amounts near the coast. Peak rates of 10 to 20mm/h about the ranges.

Area: The Richmond and Bryant ranges, also the Rai Valley and Marlborough Sounds

Valid: 18 hours from 9am Friday to 3am Saturday
Forecast: Periods of heavy northerly rain. Expect a further 80 to 110mm of rain to accumulate on top of what has already fallen. Peak rates of 10 to 20mm/h from Friday evening.

If they could only get the bad weather right for Tauranga at least once, honestly I can't remember the last time when they had successfully predicted bad weather and it actually happened?! Money well spent there...
