Three Coromandel locals who set up a state highway roadblock have claimed they did so simply to protect their families.
The blockage sprung up as level four lockdown was implemented in response to a Covid-19 case, with strong links to Coromandel Town.
An eyewitness who spoke to the trio says they made their reasons perfectly clear, and that a subsequent police presence was on hand to 'keep the peace”.
Coromandel FM's John Grant was at the scene close to Manaia on the western side of the peninsula.
'There was a car parked diagonally across one of the lanes heading north,” says John, 'and a barrier across the other lane.
'Effectively they'd completely shut State Highway 25 off.
'They were three locals wearing scarves around their faces and looking pretty menacing. One of them had a big bamboo pole.
'But their aim was fairly simple – they felt a duty to protect their whānau from people coming through from Auckland.”

Police at the scene made it clear they were there to keep the peace and help avoid any issues.
'But they were quite concerned about people objecting (to the road block) and driving straight through them,” adds John.
'Their presence was to try and bring a degree of common sense to the situation.”
A police spokesperson later confirmed they were aware of an 'unauthorised community checkpoint” at Manaia Bridge in the Coromandel.
'We are working with those involved to ensure the situation is managed safely and calmly,” says the spokesperson.
'There have not been any arrests.
'We reiterate that as during previous Covid-19 alert level four restriction periods, there should be no need for community checkpoints.
'Police will maintain a visible presence in communities across New Zealand to ensure people's travel is for essential purposes only.”
'Those people have dispersed. Police did run a checkpoint in that location and we were able to turn around a large number of vehicles,” says Police Commissioner Andrew Coster.
'We've got this, and the best place for the community is safe at home.”

No right

A public road. If passing through then no risk to their community so no right to stop people. Also it seems the Coromandel area already more compromised . Better they consentrate on getting family vaccinated.

I wonder how many of these have been vaccinated to “protect their families”.
Don't blame them!!

Don't blame them at all given how Aucklands have no regard for anyone other than themselves. Disgraceful how many fled the city again!!

Aucklanders are guyless wonders they should be locked up but they put others at risk if one of them have it. They will spread it and put us all at risk
Vigilantes

No way would I be stopping for these vigilantes. They should be charged. Illegally parked, willfully blocking a State Highway, carrying a weapon, breaking L4 lockdown, intimidating behavior in a public place, no PPE, no worksafe plan or adherence . . . Why are the Police supporting this and not moving them on. If I deliberately and Illegally block SH1 my feet wouldn't touch the ground as they dragged me off yet these vigilantes get away with it - this time and last time. Disgusting and appalling.

I hear you and totally agree with your comment re the arrogance of a lot of Aucklanders however, we cannot have these vigilante groups blocking off public roads willy-nilly like this. They do not have the authority to do so. They are nothing more than a menace. It is not useful to anyone that they are out there mingling illegally with others - others that they deem to be potentially infected. Then they will return to their people and potentially spread the virus and blame the Aucklanders who, like them, should not have been there. I am appalled the Police stood back and watched.

The Police didn't stand back and watch. The checkpoint was dispersed and a proper Police one replaced it. They kept a low profile and listened to the protesters. All in all, I think they behaved commendably and it was a good outcome.

I realise that but the illegal roadblock should have been removed immediately not eventually. The photo shows the Police standing back with their hands in their pockets. Don't get me wrong, our Police are doing a fantastic job and they have their hands tied in so many ways but this is a State Highway and it should have been cleared immediately of these vigilantes and their illegally parked vehicle etc.
