New Zealand canoe sprint paddler Lisa Carrington could make history at the Tokyo Olympics this afternoon.

Carrington is aiming to secure a third straight K1 200 title, the race she has dominated for the past 10 years with gold medals in London and Rio. No New Zealander has ever won three gold medals in the same event.

Carrington won her semi-final with an Olympic 38.127 and heads into the final at 2.37pm.

Today she could also become the first New Zealand woman to win two gold medals at the same Olympics when she teams up with Caitlin Regal in the K2 500.

Meanwhile, two-time medallist Nick Willis will be lining up at his fifth Olympics just hoping to make the 1500m final for the fourth time.

On the water today, sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke will be trying to secure their second straight 49er title.
