More rain and gales expected this afternoon

MetService advise that further heavy rain and northwest gales are expected today for parts of central New Zealand.

'A broad active trough over central and northern New Zealand is forecast to bring further periods of heavy rain and strong winds today and into the early hours of Monday morning,” says a MetService spokesperson.

A heavy rain watch has been issued for the Bay of Plenty ranges east of Whakatane and the ranges of Gisborne. This watch is valid from 2pm to 11pm today. Periods of heavy rain are expected during this time and rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria.

'The Orange Warning for Heavy Rain in Buller has now been lifted. However, a Heavy Rain Watch is now in force for Buller and also northwest Nelson for a time today. Heavy Rain Watches are also in force for parts of the lower North Island,” says a MetService spokesperson.

'The Strong Wind Warning for Wellington and Wairarapa south of Featherston is now lifted. However, Strong Wind Watches remain in force for the remainder of Wairarapa, the Tararua District and Hawkes Bay south of Hastings until early this afternoon.”

People are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts.

MetService has also issued a heavy rain watch for the following four areas:

Area: Waitomo, northern parts of Taranaki, Taupo south of Turangi, Taumarunui, and Taihape
Valid: 18 hours from 8:00 am Sunday to 2:00 am Monday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria, mainly about the mountains and hill country.

Area: Nelson west of Motueka
Valid: 5 hours from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday
Forecast: This Watch now covers a period for this (Sunday) afternoon, with the possibility of some localised places accumulating 30 or 40mm of rain during this time, especially about the ranges. Peak intensities of 10 to 15mm/h possible.

Area: The Tararua Range
Valid: 18 hours from 8:00 am Sunday to 2:00 am Monday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria. Note, the Watch period has been extended to now cover all of today (Sunday) through to 2am Monday.

Area: Buller
Valid: 7 hours from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm Sunday
Forecast: The Heavy Rain Warning (Orange) has now been lifted. However, this Watch covers the possibility of some localised places accumulating 30 or 40mm of rain from late this (Sunday) morning through to this evening, especially in the ranges about and north of Seddonville. Peak intensities of 10 to 15mm/h possible.

MetService has also issued a strong wind watch for the Hawkes Bay are south of Hastings, the Tararua District, and Wairarapa about and north of Featherston. This watch is valid from 8am - 1pm today. North to northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places at times. This watch now includes Wairarapa about and north of Featherston.
