They assisted in the search and rescue from Maketu after being alerted by police.

'Upon arrival on the scene the dinghy was found to be upside down with one person clinging to it,” says a Coastguard spokesperson.

The coastguard shadowed the person back to shore as they were unable to get too close to the dinghy due to the nature of its location.

'Once on shore they were cold and shaken and then taken for medical treatment.”

A spokesperson for St John's Ambulance has confirmed that one person has been transported to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

The person who has subsequently died was then located after a shore search by Fire and Emergency, says a Coastguard spokesperson.
