Three bridges in the Ashburton district have collapsed or been washed away, and the authorities are warning that others are likely to be unstable.
Flooding from two days of persistent, heavy rain has left the entire Canterbury region in a state of emergency.
At least 300 homes in the region have been evacuated.
Of the households evacuated 243 are in Waimakariri, where stopbanks of the Eyre and Ashley Rivers are expected to fail.
Another 20 homes have been evacuated in rural Ashburton, and in the nearby township of Hinds which is now surrounded by water.
Stretches of several Canterbury state highways are closed because of the flooding.

Correct reporting

It was reported above "At 10am today the Ashburton River was at 1252 cubic metres dropping from its peak level yesterday of 1448 cubic metres - before the rain started it was under 6 cubic metres." Presumably, the reporter is noting the flow of the river. If so, then it should be written as 1,448 cubic metres per second (or minute) as the case may be. In engineering terms cubic metres/ sec is called cumec.
