Tauranga's cricketing superstar Kane Williamson has described the 'whirlwind” surrounding his exit from India amid the Covid-19 surge across the South Asian nation.

Williamson, along with several other Blackcaps, was in India as part of the Indian Premier League competition before it was suspended due to a dramatic rise of Covid-19.

Speaking to the press from quarantine in the United Kingdom, where New Zealand are preparing for upcoming games against England and the World Test Series final against India, Williamson has expressed his sadness at the situation in India and gratitude for being able to get out safely.

'The last few weeks were pretty interesting to say the least,” he says.

'Things were tracking sort of OK for the most part then we saw a quick escalation obviously of Covid which has been so tragic in India. It's such a challenging time for them as a country.”

Williamson, along with several other Blackcaps and IPL cricketers initially spent time quarantined in the Maldives after leaving India, before exiting for the UK.

'For us as Kiwis trying to logistically make plans, and for the boards to make plans, it was a challenge as things moved so quickly to see plans come to fruition.

'So yeah it has been a bit of a whirlwind for most players involved in terms of logistics and getting to where they need to get to but there was a lot of effort that went in to see the players and those involved get home safely.”

The Blackcaps are now based at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton although they are still waiting for the arrival of another Bay of Plenty star in Trent Boult.

The Mount Maunganui resident was also playing in the IPL before its postponement.

The 31-year-old then headed back to New Zealand to spend time with his family, following a period of quarantine.

He is likely to miss the England tests but is expected to be available for the Test Series final clash with India.

Tauranga-based bowler Neil Wagner, who is likely to take over from Boult in the Blackcaps team should Boult miss out against England, believes his teammate will be raring to go once he makes the journey.

'I've been talking to him a little bit,” he says.

'He's been training in his room and obviously he is fizzing to get out of his room, see his family and freshen up before he comes over to the UK.

'No doubt he will be looking forward to joining the group and getting ready for what is a really important time for us.”

The Blackcaps take on England in two tests from June 2-7 and June 10-15 before facing India in the World Test Series final at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton starting June 18.
