Positive Covid cases in Perth pauses flights to NZ

The Ministry of Health says flights from Western Australia to New Zealand should be paused, after more Covid-19 cases were identified in Perth.

Officials conducted a rapid public health assessment for NZ late on Saturday night, and determined the pause should occur while further assessment was carried out, including a further assessment and information from Australian health officials.

An Air NZ flight and a Singapore Airlines flight from Perth were both due to land in Auckland at 5.50am this morning but were cancelled.

Ministry of Health officials were last night advised a worker at a Perth managed isolation facility has tested positive for COVID-19 as part of routine testing. Two of the person's seven housemates have also tested positive.

Officials in Australia say the man in his 20s could have been infectious in the community for four days.

The guard has had his first dose of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, worked on the same floor as two other positive cases staying in hotel quarantine.

It's the latest trouble to hit the trans-Tasman bubble between New Zealand and Australia, and comes after some passengers who flew from Brisbane to NZ were told to self-isolate following a breach of an airport green zone in Australia.

Western Australia's Premier Mark McGowan on Saturday said the Perth and Peel communities must go back to wearing masks inside and outside immediately, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Anyone who has left Perth in the past four days and arrived in New Zealand should check the website https://www.wa.gov.au/organisation/covid-communications/covid-19-coronavirus-locations-visited-confirmed-cases to see locations of interest relating to the positive cases.

Recent arrivals in New Zealand who have been at these locations of interest should self-isolate immediately and call Healthline this morning for further advice.

Just burst the bubble and be patient. Since the bubble formed there has been one farce after another.

Bubble BS. Australia and New Zealand with their closed borders and neurotic totalitarian Police states are hilarious. Threatening to jail someone for 5 years for trying to get home. Disgraceful buffoons.

The threat of jail isn't because someone was trying to get home. The threat is as a result of some moron ignoring the rules.....deliberately circumnavigating them, and putting NZ businesses and Kiwi's at risk. Rule breakers should be jailed, or at least heavily fined!!

Wrong. The threat was because the bubble is BS and both Governments are incompetent. He should be applauded as a whistle blower for highlighting it. It's just deflection to appease morons. Nobody will be jailed. Empty gesture to throw smoke on the woeful vaccine rollout and how they have snookered themselves with their neurotic zero covid strategy. It's falling apart. Not sustainable. US and UK are almost back to normal. Europe is easing restrictions despite cases higher now than a year ago. Hahaha

Hanging by a thread.

It seems that those of us who had fears about the bubble, were justified. There have already been cases of people breaking the rules and the bottom line is that the populations can't be trusted and the governments cannot do much about it. I agree with The Prof that the whole bubble thing should be closed until we are sure that measures can be taken to make it safe.

I agree with your first sentence, but I see no cause for levity in something serious enough that people are dying from it. We don't live in the US, UK, or Europe and , right now, I certainly wouldn't want to... Friends there (US, UK, Spain, and Germany) are describing a far from normal life, and we have yet to see what effect the easing of restrictions is going to have...
