Women hosts on Airbnb have collectively earned more than $1 million in the Bay of Plenty since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

That is according to data from the vacation rental online marketplace, which earmarks another Kiwi city as the top city in the world for representation by women hosts.

The report suggests that since March 2020, women who have listed at least one property for hosting on Airbnb have collectively earned more than $1,258,000 in the Bay of Plenty region.

That is the highest regional amount in New Zealand, with Northland second on more than $992,000.

'We're really proud of the role Airbnb plays as an economic empowerment engine for people across New Zealand and the communities they live in,” says Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb's Country Manager for New Zealand and Australia.

'It's incredibly inspiring to see so many entrepreneurial women using our platform to not only secure their financial future, but make a huge contribution to local businesses and economic recovery efforts.

'The tourism dollars they bring in help support job growth, which in turn benefits thousands of women across the country.

'It's wonderful that Kiwi women are leading the way globally as Hosts on Airbnb.”

With Easter around the corner, Wheeldon is encouraging more Kiwis to become hosts on Airbnb.

'Not only can you use hosting to earn extra income and even fund your own getaways, but you'll be playing a really important role in helping people reconnect and spend quality time with loved ones.”

Christchurch topped the global ranking of cities by representation of women hosts with Auckland claiming fifth spot.

Christchurch took out the number one spot globally with 70 per cent women hosts and Auckland was ranked fifth with women making up almost two thirds, 64 per cent, of the city's host community.
