Political integrity

The public is sceptical of politicians' promises and not without due cause, but here the latest move by the Government to pass with urgency a bill to ‘abolish local government petition rights' is a direct reversal of their own election promise: 'Labour will ensure that major decisions about local democracy involve full participation of the local population from the outset”.

Can there be any greater rejection of democratic principles?

Pakeha abused the referendum option

Posted on 27-02-2021 15:57 | By Peter Dey

Pakeha who used local body referendums to block Maori Wards were abusing the system. Their actions directly opposed the Treaty of Waitangi, which entitles Maori to local body representation. Democratic rights which are abused undemocratically can be withdrawn. That is all that Nanaia Mahuta did.
