An anticyclone brings mainly settled weather today

Dry weather is expected for the whole of New Zealand today apart from Fiordland which could see some drizzle, says a WeatherWatch spokesperson.

After a cool start to the day, temperatures should be warming up this afternoon.

Winds are generally light with afternoon sea breezes although northerlies through Cook Strait could become a bit gusty.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato & Bay Of Plenty
Any morning cloud breaks away then sunny, light winds tend southwest in the afternoon. An afternoon sea breeze develops for eastern Northland and BOP.
Highs: 24-28

Western North Island (including Central North Island)
Sunny with light winds, tending westerly in the afternoon. A cool start for inland areas, especially about the Central Plateau.
Highs: 21-27

Eastern North Island
Sunny, light winds tend east to northeast in the afternoon. A hot afternoon inland away from the coast.
Highs: 24-29

Wellington
Sunny, any morning cloud breaks away. Northerly winds, breezy at times especially afternoon.
High: 19-24

Canterbury
Sunny weather, any early cloud clears. Afternoon east to northeast breezes across the plains.
Highs: 22-31

West Coast
Any morning cloud breaks then sunny, cloud for Fiordland may bring some drizzle. Light winds tend west to southwest in the afternoon.
Highs: 18-27

Southland & Otago
Sunny weather, light winds inland with hot temperatures. Afternoon westerlies for Southland, afternoon east to northeast breezes about coastal Otago.
Highs: 20-31
