Buses are essential

In relation to the letter ‘Buses go round and round' [The Weekend Sun, January 15]. Yes D. Morris you did miss a few things, probably unintentionally, but you picked the least busy time of the day to do your bus survey.

More importantly you have overlooked the citizens of this city, including elderly and handicapped who have no other means of travel to do their business, shopping and visit their doctor or health centre, etc. and rely on a regular service to do just that.

Stopping any service for a couple of hours or so in the middle of the day would be counter-productive and most confusing for everyone.

I suggest that you do the survey again at the same location at say, 8am or 5pm on a week day, or even an hour before or after those times, and then publish your results.

You will have some difficulty counting passengers as often there is barely standing room available.

Buses Are Our Independence

With reference to both R Fowke of Papamoa and P Cummins of Ohauiti (The Weekend Sun January 22, pgs 22&23. Thank you for reminding D.Morris of those like me who don’t drive. Independence is something people with cars frequently refer to and with some limitations buses are our independence allowing us to get around the city and stay connected. I don’t see the empty bus crusaders offering their services, and in facts I don’t know what D Morris hoped to achieve with his survey other than stir up discontent. Even if the service were discontinued his rates wouldn’t decrease. Besides we all pay for things we don’t or can’t use. I for instance can access neither Bay Park nor ASB Arena (inaccessible by bus) yet I don’t begrudge those who can. So perhaps our empty bus crusaders just need to get over themselves.

Full sized buses are only needed at rush hours - smaller buses or vans would be more appropriate for the rest of the time!
