S Wagner [The Weekend Sun, November 13] claims Tauranga CBD has declined over the past couple of years.

We have lived in Tauranga for over 50 years and many years ago Tauranga City Council claimed because Mt Maunganui had water meters, Tauranga city should have them too.

I wrote back to the newspaper immediately stating that if Tauranga was to get water meters due to Mt Maunganui having them, Mt Maunganui should get parking meters because Tauranga had them.

Yes, you guessed it - Tauranga city got the water meters but Mt Maunganui did not get parking meters.

Anyone with a brain could see what was going to happen to Tauranga and it has.

My understanding is that the three top council representatives at that time were Mayor Stuart Crosby, Deputy Mayor David Stewart and councillor Wayne Moultrie (ex-Mt Maunganui mayor when Tauranga and Mount were separate councils) and again my understanding was that those top three council representatives all represented the Mount.
