Smart thinking for public transport

I raise this subject because Tauranga City Council is about to spend $40 million for bus lanes, for empty buses, on Cameron Road.

Sensible thinkers in other countries have a new way for public transport that works.

Users of the service request a ride using their phone. They then walk to a nearby corner (known as a virtual bus stop) where they are collected by a small van or car.

Together with other passengers the driver takes them to the nearest corner to their destination. So simple, so cheap and so efficient!

Big empty buses (lemons) are finished!

In New Zealand, Timaru is the first town to operate the new system. We should follow their lead and save $40 million.

Very sensible. Perhaps with a new Mayor (thank goodness) and a reformed council, we may just get some better decisions being made. I do hope so. Ask the ratepayers more often.
