EARLIER:

Weather warnings continue across the country as Northland recorded 60 millimetres of rain overnight and gusts up to 75km/h.

On Tuesday, MetService issued severe weather warnings and watches for Northland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne and Coromandel, as well as Nelson and Westland in the South Island.

They were for heavy rain and strong wind – and the worst of the weather was expected to hit overnight.

On Wednesday morning, Auckland was experiencing heavy rain and strong winds – but not enough to warrant a watch or warning.

Meteorologist Alwyn Bakker says Northland had the heaviest rain with its Kerikeri weather station recording 60mm of rain since 6pm on Tuesday.

Bakker says it's 'reasonable rain” although no way near what Northland had endured in July.

It was also 'gusty” in the region with stations recording winds of up to 75kmh, he said.

Fire and Emergency NZ says it hasn't attended any weather-related call outs in the upper North Island.

Further south in Nelson, weather stations had recorded more than 50mm of rainfall since 10pm on Tuesday with more heavy rain expected throughout the day.

In the ranges of Westland, more than 20mm of rain had fallen but Bakker said peak rain rates were still to come with more heavy rain expected.

Heavy rain will continue throughout the day in Northland, Nelson and Westland, expecting to ease in the evening.

On Thursday, a front is expected to move southeast over the North Island and upper South Island, while an associated low approaches the South Island's West Coast.

The front is expected to spread strong showery west to northwest winds over the North Island then weaken, and become slow moving over the South Island on Friday.

A narrow ridge of high pressure moves over New Zealand on Saturday, followed by another low on Sunday.
