Bay MPs expenses revealed

For the first time ever the public knows how much MPs spend on travel and accommodation after Speaker of the House Dr Lockwood Smith released figures.

Prime Minister John Key and Speaker of the House Dr Lockwood Smith released expenses incurred by MPs.

The Bay of Plenty's five MPs spent over $240,000 between January 1 and June 30.
Releasing these figures was triggered in part by a British scandal earlier this year when MPs abused their parliamentary system by using taxpayer money on personal affairs like cleaning their swimming pools and moats.
Bay of Plenty MPs expense totals include accommodation in and out of Wellington, air travel and surface travel.
The expenses of Tauranga MP Simon Bridges totalled $45, 464; Bay of Plenty MP Tony Ryall $63,873; Coromandel MP Sandra Goudie $44,277; Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell $51,635; and Rotorua MP Todd McClay $35,028.
Minister of Health Tony Ryall did not incur Wellington accommodation expenses because he resides in government property, but he incurred $21,785 for international travel.
