Legalisation causes problems

I do not support (D Carey Weekend Sun, June 19) the view that legalising cannabis, will to, quote: 'create a legal and verifiable marketplace, and will take away the gangs' tax-free money”. The reality is, the gangs and other growers, illegal or otherwise, will simply sell a more potent product at a discounted price by undercutting proposed taxation rate 25 per cent. Therefore, creating an open market rather than abolishing the black market for cannabis.

The writer also goes on to say, economists (NZIER) expect up to $490 million into NZs economy, this may be true. However, there are costs behind legalising a hazardous, harmful and addictive substance, such as cannabis. In addition to the dollars, there are also the emotional and social costs, which cannot be overlooked.

Look no further than our road statistics for young drivers, accidents involving alcohol and drugs is a concern to us all. And our health system, particularly mental health is severely over stretched as it is. Our young people have enough trouble with alcohol now, it would be naïve to believe they would be more responsible when it comes to having an uncontrolled supply of cannabis available 24/7.

pull your head out of the sand and stop repeating the same old prohibitionist lies, anyway besides the fact that it is a natural and one of the most versatile plants on Gods green earth, it is still an individuals choice as to what they use in THEIR OWN bodies, without interference from the State.

taxation to fund social harms

D Carey forgets to mention the 15% GST added on top of the duty, so it would actually be 40% taxation. More than enough to fund rehabilitation and/or taxation. Education around drug driving can be bought in. Things like having a sober driver easily solve this slight problem. I'd like to know the emotional harms of cannabis use. Really clutching at straws.

That would be great...........

.....to think and live without 'interference' from the state, I am into that big time, but, there will be way too much harm done to others as a 'by product' of this reform being passed. Yup what people do in there own time is and should continue to be their business, BUT..it will not end there, we know that, issues adding to that of alcohol and meth will continue to increase all types of social and legal problems. Being human by itself has it's own issues, but alongside our natural failings, add yet more drugs to the equation and we will have, without any doubt whatsoever, an ever increasing level of problems many related to a legal increase use of a currently prohibited drug. Restraint on it's use needs to be not only maintained, but advanced along with others such as alcohol/meth to keep damage to a minimum
