Rena response questioned

Tauranga based New Zealand First spokesperson Brendan Horan says charging the owners of the Rena six months after the ship grounded 'highlights the slack response to the disaster” by Maritime New Zealand.

MNZ laid charges against the Greece-based Daina Shipping Company on Thursday in relation to the grounding of the container ship on October 5.

Brendan Horan.

'The prosecution is welcomed, but the pedestrian response has contributed to a nightmare groundhog day scenario for people living and working in the area,” says the New Zealand First transport spokesperson.

'Daily reports on water toxicity levels at beaches hit hard by the Rena oil spills are needed so there is a measure of trust and certainty amongst those of us who want to use the beaches safely.”

Brendan is questioning how oil is still leaking from the Rena six months after the ship hit the reef.

'The Government claimed before the election that there was no more oil on the boat.”
He says those affected by the disaster know this claim to be untrue.

Brendan is also concerned about the fact 'fully laden containers continue to end up lost at sea.”

'Why weren't they tagged with GPS beacons so authorities know at all times where they are located?

'By failing to do this, Maritime New Zealand has created a major shipping hazard which has forced the cancellation of a major yacht race over the Easter weekend.”
Brendan says it's time the 'Government did the right thing and cleaned up this polluting boat on a rock”.

Nobody ever said there was no more oil left on Rena, containers have been tagged with locating beacons, how many people has suffered from toxication from being on the beach,if you had a greater idea in how or when info was gathered to lay the prosicution why didnt you suggest it to the authorities.Read Sunlive and you get all the updated info.

Wake up Brendon

Since as an MP you are "invisible" in Tauranga, your grossly out of date comments on the Rena are typical of what those NZ First voters can expect from "their man in Parliament". You are out of touch as well as out of sight and one wonders why you are drawing an MP's salary at all.

All the oil could never be pumped from the Rena; The people doing the job have done extremely well to remove as much as they have;In fact there was never any hope of refloating the ship even if it were possile to take most of the containers off; The Rena hit the reef at 18 knots at the peak of the highest spring tide, with no support under the stern it was only a matter of time before it would break in two. It is all very well for armchair experts including politicians to mouth off about who should be doing what; I am sure that the real experts are doing the best job that can be done and we are lucky that we have escaped a worse disaster, a lot more fuel oil could have leaked out; So put a sock in it and let them get on with it. Bill H.

Don't think he has engineering credentials, but open to correction. Not sure about his observational skills either. What was that about his child getting covered in oil but he didn't notice till he got home??? Must be desperate to get his name in print I wonder?

Muppet

Where was this muppet when this was all happening? Thats right, in the same glass house he is in now - throwing stones. This is a completely typical response from anyone in Labour, NZ First, Greens etc - they are all quick to criticise, but sadly lacking when it comes to any intelligent response when faced with the question of "what would you have done differently". Bottom line is this. Maritime NZ and all the local volunteers (myself included) have carried out a world class response. It only needs one to look at the Costa Concordia to see how well we responded to this. Mr Horan - keep your nose out of it. No one here voted for you.

The Government and their agencies performance on the Pike River, Christchurch earthquakes, Leaky Homes and the Rena disasters is appalling. Basil Faulty could have done a better job. Hope there will be an inquest and then we will know the truth.
