LIVE: Jacinda Ardern on day one of lockdown

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Minister of Finance Grant Robertson are giving a media briefing on day one of the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There have now been 283 confirmed and probable cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand - the Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield confirmed 78 of those cases earlier today.

New Zealand is now in a National State of Emergency for at least seven days.

Ahead of the lockdown the prime minister was urging everyone to stay at home and warned that the number of COVID-19 cases could continue to rise during the lockdown period.

She says it will get worse before it gets better because there is a lag time with the virus, with the modelling suggesting the country could have several thousand cases that have yet to show up in the official count.

If you have symptoms of the coronavirus, call the NZ Covid-19 Healthline on 0800 358 5453 (+64 9 358 5453 for international SIMs) or call your GP - don't show up at a medical centre

From my window I can see a steady stream of cars travelling along Chadwick Rd. A dairy is open and is doing a steady trade.
