The Katikati Fruitgrowers Association is concerned about a lack of biosecurity protection at Rotorua Airport as there is no full time sniffer dog there.
Association president Hugh Moore says fruit growers are happy to stump up with the money to pay for the dog as this is what they feel is needed to protect their industry from unwanted pests brought into the country in undeclared food.
Hugh says to not have this protection is dangerous for the Bay of Plenty as it is a major fruit growing country and kiwifruit is an $800 million industry.
'To us it's a risk, a huge risk,” says Hugh.
He does not understand why New Zealand needs to have so many international airports.
'For biosecurity reasons it is craziness.”
He is aware that it is not practical to have biosecurity officers at the airport at all times because of low demand, but a dog on-site is a must.
Rotorua International Airport CEO George White says the same procedures are followed in Rotorua as with the rest of the country.
