Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reminds motorists that the Wairoa River Bridge on State Highway 2 will be closed overnight from 10.30pm on Monday, February 24, until 5.30am on Tuesday, February 25.
This is the first of seven planned closures, from February to April, to allow Western Bay of Plenty District Council to install sections of the cycleway extension on the bridge.
The cycleway extension is one of the final stages of the Omokoroa to Tauranga Cycleway.

Transport Agency Bay of Plenty System Manager, Rob Campbell, says this is a significant closure and works are being carried out overnight to minimise disruption.
'We encourage people to plan ahead, allow extra time, or consider delaying unnecessary travel where possible.”
During the full closure the following local road detour will be in place:
- Northbound motorists from Tauranga will need to take the signposted detour from SH2 in Bethlehem via Moffat Road and Cambridge Road, onto SH29 before connecting with Poripori Road, onto Crawford Road through to Wairoa Road and then back onto SH2.
- Southbound motorists will need to take Wairoa Road before connecting with Crawford Road, through to Poripori Road and then onto SH29.
The detour route is not suitable for High Productivity Motor Vehicles - HPMV's greater than 50Max, over-dimension or overweight vehicles.

The next closure is planned for Tuesday March 3 2020. Remaining closure dates will be released as they are confirmed with Council's contractor.
The Transport Agency and Council thank motorists for their patience.

All this for blinkin bikes, NOBODY will use it, what a waste of money,it should have been widenend to 4 lanes,all this for whinging bike people, they should have followed the railway line,where they could have put ply across the middle and rode on that,but NO have to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$millions on this,it will blow out watch this space and why did they not close it on sat and sunday night when not a lot of freight coming through, the cost to freight companies to go other ways is HUGE COST,BUT TCC AND NZTA DONT CARE.my shillings worth Sunlive Thankyou,10-4 out. phew.

The more people on bikes the better....health-wise and traffic-wise! I do agree with old trucker on one point though...why not Sunday night closures?

There is a lot of interest in this within the cycling community. We will be able to travel to Omokoroa once the route is completed. Golly gosh... you make your comment without regard for factual research. The big question I have is... how much is it costing and, what happens to it when the planned replacement bridge starts in a couple of years??? Anyone thought of that??

Great interest in completing this cycleway given obstructions by the likes of kiwi rail. Unlikely to be wasted money because replacement bridge won't happen this century despite political promises

there is enough accident and congestion on SH2,apart from the casual or training rider who would ride from Omokoroa to TGA,around the coast along the rail line in view of the harbour I would.What is going to the cycle lane work when SH2 upgrade go ahead.Money wasted
