A Bay of Plenty pet food company is facing charges of discharging contaminants into the air.

The Ziwi factory is in Boeing Place Mount Maunganui and the Bay of Plenty Regional Council has received 979 complaints since 2008 about odours coming from it.

Of those, 743 have been made since January 2018.

Nicky Reid, who lives and works in Mount Maunganui, spoke to SunLive last year, she has been complaining to the regional council about the smell for more than a year.

'The impact of the smell is pretty horrendous to be honest, so much so that we are considering moving completely. It's just the most putrid stench”

The company Ziwi Limited was represented by their lawyer Thomas Refoy-Butler in Tauranga District Court on Tuesday.

The company is facing nine counts of discharging contaminants into the air or land under the Resource Management Act and four abatement notices.

Ziwi Peak Limited also appeared in court, facing eight counts discharging contaminants into the air or land under the Resource Management Act.

Thomas proposed a trial of four days be set down for the air discharge charges, but a suitable date for a trial is yet to be found.

The matter will be raised again in Tauranga District Court on March 3.

I Wonder

If Nicky Reid will get the same disgraceful hammering that the so called serial complainer of Greerton Hall is unjustifiably being slammed with. Noise pollution is just another form of air pollution. What do these people expect living around a pet food factory . . . just saying

It smells

The smell spreads all the way up to bayfair most mornings, its disgusting. Pleased this is getting sorted after many years of this ongoing issue
