Opportunities for Maori students

The Te Putea Whakatupu Trust is taking applications for two different scholarships; the Rona Scholarship worth $10,000 each for up to 10 recipients and the Tawera Scholarship worth $10,000 each for up to 30 recipients.

The Rona Scholarship is offered to Maori completing a degree in fisheries, aquaculture or marine sciences associated with the fisheries and aquaculture industries.

The Rona Scholarship is designed to help address the trust's strategic focus on lifting the level of Maori participation in middle and senior science and management roles in the fisheries and aquaculture industries.

It hopes to ensure the potential of the post treaty settlement era is maximised by leveraging capacity and capability building to support greater Maori control and involvement in decision making in Maori fisheries and aquaculture futures.

The Rona Scholarship sits alongside the Tawera Scholarship, which is offered to Maori completing a bachelor degree in business, management, or commerce.

Applications for the Tawera Scholarship are also now open, with the trust offering up to 30 scholarships of up to $10,000 each.

It is envisaged that the recipients of both scholarships will be committed to the future economic and social development of Maori, iwi, hapu and whanau and help ensure the sustainability and appropriate management of Maori owned assets.

An important component of the Rona and Tawera Scholarships is the requirement to attend the 2012 conference hosted by Te Putea Whakatupu Trust – Nga Whetu Hei Whai – Charting Pathways to Maori Industry Futures.

Attending the conference will provide an opportunity for the scholarship recipients to meet Maori, iwi and industry leaders and to hear about their future plans and aspirations for iwi and other Maori economic entities.

Maori industry leaders in turn have an opportunity to motivate and inspire the scholarship recipients to commit to some future role with either a Te Ohu Kaimoana related entity, iwi, or other Maori ventures.

It is envisaged that this will further inspire more of our rangatahi to see a future potential future role for them in these Maori industry futures.

Application forms for both scholarships can be downloaded from www.tpwt.maori.nz

Racial Bias ??????

As this is "offered to Maori completing a degree in fisheries," will the race relations folk be investigating why it is for ONE race only???? Rather like the MAORI All-blacks isn't it. But apartheid is OK in NZ as long as it favours ONE particular race. I congratulate the Te Putea Whakatupu Trust for giving young folk a helping hand, and this is in no way a criticism. But I despair of my country of open hypocrisy, where blatantly apartheid situations are just accepted without comment. Can't we accept that discrimination IS discrimination, even when the PC brigade tell us it's "affirmative action", or other garbage labels??? NOTE that I am NOT denigrating any race, just the all pervading principal of our Kiwi double standard!

I tend to agree

xenasdad......there would be utter outrage if such a thing as a "pakeha school" or "pakeha rugby team" was to ever come about....this country is full of double standards...we are ALL New Zealanders and we should ALL be included as one...
