'It is vitally important all generations in Tauranga know to swim.”

This is a strong message from Tauranga Swim School owner Andrea Sinden.

Tauranga Swim School is hosting a free Water Safety Community Day next Sunday to boost education around staying safe in water.

Andrea says we must have these skills because we live on an island.

'We are surrounded by water and the kiwi way of life is to hang out in the water,” says Andrea. 'It's so important kids and adults know how to swim. Swimming lessons are non-negotiable for everyone.”

The day will consist of life saving, swim skills, an amazing race, sailing and kayaking and a dive rescue.

'Last year was the first time a water safety event of this size was put on in the Bay of Plenty, and due to the amazing success and fun everyone had, we have now decided to make it an annual event with the support of Water Safety NZ,” says Andrea.

Andrea says this event is for the whole family and will cater to swimmers of all levels.

'Our family fun day is an event you won't want to miss with lots of fun to be had learning, and prizes to be won.

'People can register a team of six or enter as an individual in our ‘Amazing Race' event. There is also the famous Tauranga Swim School lollie scramble, raffled, food cars, icecreams and our DJ is sure to your favourite songs all day long.

'We'd love everyone to have a go in the kayaks, try capsizing a little yacht and practice deep water diving. It's a good opportunity to prepare for this summer and learn how to have fun while staying safe in the water.”

The free Water Safety Community Day will be held at Toi Ohomai Aquatic Centre from 8am-2pm on Sunday, October 20. All welcome.
