Our Volcanix girls head down to Christchurch this weekend in their final Farah Palmer Cup round robin game of the season.

The Bay of Plenty team are playing Canterbury on Sunday afternoon at the Orangetheory Stadium, known as the home of Canterbury rugby.

Bay of Plenty Volcanix coach Rodney Gibbs says his side need to release the handbrake against Canterbury.

The side had their second win of the season beating Manawatu 30-17, and now face Farah Palmer Premiership co-leader Canterbury at Orangetheory Stadium on Sunday at 2.05pm.

While Rodney is happy with last weekend's result he says, his side will need to lift to another level against Canterbury if they want to be successful against their opponents.

'I think the two wins have created a bit of belief, even if they weren't perfect. We have to release the handbrake and play our game with conviction. If we can do that and put some pressure on them, then like any team, they become vulnerable.”

Rodney says the side has worked well during the week and took a lot of learnings from the match against Manawatu.

'At times, the team was under pressure on defence, the girls know what they need to do. It's just a matter of implementing our plan and having faith in our systems.”

The Volcanix has been guilty of starting slowly and the coach says, the side needed to rectify this especially against Canterbury.

'Canterbury hasn't lost, we know we are up against it but we have a team who believe, and we've said let's go there and be the first team to beat them. But regardless of the result, we want to go down there and put on a good performance.

'They have some clever players. If they get a bit of momentum and some go forward, they can be very accurate. If you can't influence them in those areas, then you are in for a long day.”

Rodney says the Volcanix defence will be critical against Canterbury.

'They are a typical Canterbury team, solid across the park and will make you pay for your mistakes. I think we attack reasonably well but the defence is the one thing we really have to make sure we get right this weekend.”

Rodney has made only three changes from the team that played Manawatu. Anahera Mohi and Olivia Richardson join the team on the bench, Captain Christie Yule moves to blindside flanker and Tynealle Fitzgerald also moves to the bench.
