Hauraki District Mayor John Tregidga will end his 36-year local government career on a high note with the completion this week of a million-dollar project to pump wastewater from Karangahake and Mackaytown to the Paeroa Wastewater Treatment Plant.

'I can remember when we took out the original water pipeline to allow DoC to put in a walkway alongside the Waitawheta River, which was fantastic, but it's also drawn more and more visitors to the area, and the public toilets just weren't coping,” he says.

The government has also chipped in with $215,830 towards the new system, which the Mayor says will not only ease the pressure on the Karangahake Reserve car park toilets and look after the environment, but will also allow for future growth and development in the area.

'Most properties in the area are on septic tank systems and soak-aways, which has made it difficult for property owners to subdivide and comply with waste disposal regulations in the past.

"Now, they'll be able to connect to the new pressure system if they wish, which is going to allow business and residential growth. There's also a big environmental benefit, so it's a win-win."

More information about how to connect to the new system will be made available in the new year.
