Firearm safety

Last week, as a good, obedient, potential mass murderer, I partook in the gun buyback scheme at Mt Maunganui, rather grumpily, so that may have coloured my experience a little.

I got my number and was prepared for a lengthy wait as there was a good turnout, with people chatting, a generally happy but resigned bunch of people.

After half an hour of waiting and watching the process, I noticed one of the evaluators consistently breaking the second rule of firearm safety, namely 'Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction.'

Most cases of his inspecting up to this point involved pointing the rifles in the direction of the waiting people. I approached the officer on point duty just inside the door and raised the matter reasonably with him and then went to get a cup of tea from the provided catering.

Whilst returning to my seat the person I had pointed out my concerns about approached me and remonstrated that having had 53 years' experience in firearms he knew a thing or two about firearm safety.

I continued to my seat thoroughly chastised but nevertheless confused. I did notice though, a marked improvement in his firearms handling.
