Kawerau school fight continues

Kawerau Intermediate is making another bid to retain its current status and not be amalgamated with Kawerau College.

Supporters of the school, who want it to remain open, are going to the High Court in a bid to have the decision to merge the two schools reversed.

Principal Daryl Aim says they are fighting for the school because the merger is not the option the community chose.

At the beginning of 2010, then Education Minister Anne Tolley announced she was going to merge the schools in Kawerau due to falling roll numbers.

She presented the community with three options and requested feedback from the public on these options before making a decision.

Anne then decided to merge Kawerau Intermediate and Kawerau College, as well as amalgamating three primary schools to one.

Daryl says Kawerau Intermediate has fought hard to keep the school open, but all attempts have failed.

He says the only other option is to go to the High Court in a last ditch attempt.

Data gathered through three Official Information Act request will be used to form the base for going to the High Court.
