Tauranga rates go to the dogs

Tauranga ratepayers will pay for dogs in future, even if they don't own one.

In the adopted Ten Year Plan, ratepayers will pay for 20 per cent of the cost of managing the city's dog population, which will subsidise dog owners.
Because of the ratepayer support, licence fees will drop from $87 to $69 if they are paid by August 1. The standard fee is $100.The 20 per cent cost works out at about $120,000 or $3 per ratepayer.
