Chess enthusiasts heading to Mount for tournament

Mount Maunganui RSA Chess Club president Werner Corbe expecting another record participation at the one-day annual national level tournament.

Chess players are brushing up on their strategy for a show down in Mount Maunganui this month.

It's the one-day annual national level tournament held by the Mount Maunganui RSA Chess Club on February 23.

The chess tournament attracts players from around the country.

Spokesman Caleb Wright says players from outside Tauranga out number local players.

He says last year it attracted 66 players or all ages and skills.

They came from around the North Island including Wellington and Auckland and as far as Christchurch in the South Islands,” says Caleb.

'A prize pool of $1400 is up for grabs, spread across three graded groups.

'Each player has a chess rating based on mathematical calculations that puts them either in the top, middle or junior groups.

'The club has been a shining example for others to follow in what works locally in tournament and club chess.

'The club prides itself in local knowledge being hard to beat.”

Mount Maunganui RSA Chess Club president Werner Corbe says there was a record turnout last year and that are expecting similar number this year.

'I have been a chess player for the last sixty or so years after being taught by my father when I was just ten years old,” says Werner.

'Every game is a challenge, win, draw or loss.
"More importantly I like to mix with the other people at the Mount Maunganui RSA Chess Club, coming and going as I wish."
The tournament is open to everyone.

Entry forms for the one-day national level tournament on Saturday 23 February, can be collected from the Mount Maunganui RSA Chess Club on Mondays from 7pm onwards and at the Tauranga RSA Chess club on Fridays from 5pm onwards.
