ACC and Environment Minister Nick Smith will join the growing list of current cabinet ministers to receive the SmartGrowth tour when he visits Tauranga today, Friday August 21.
'He is meeting with ACC and other organisations but he is having a session with the mayors of Tauranga, the Western Bay of Plenty, their CEO's and the EBOP chairman, myself and Bill Wasley the SmartGrowth independent chairman,” says SmartGrowth member and regional councillor Andrew von Dadelszen.
Nick Smith will be briefed on the growth issues that are generated by the Western BOP economy, and the strategies SmartGrowth is developing to deal with them.
SmartGrowth, a collaboration of Western Bay of Plenty and regional political bodies, plus Tangata Whenua, is a local initiative, formed to devise management strategies for the region's local government.
It is a successful model now being adopted in Canterbury, with Bill Wasley as the independent chair of that body also.
'We've been successful because SmartGrowth isn't about restricting growth,” says Andrew, 'It's about managing it in collaboration between the three councils and tangata whenua.”
Other cabinet ministers, who have inspected SmartGrowth's work include, John Key, Bill English, Tony Ryall, Steven Joyce, Maurice Williamson and Rodney Hide.
'It's been instrumental in getting things like the Eastern Link and the Tauranga Central Corridor funding,” says Andrew.
'It's working because we work as a collaborative model – that's the key to it.”
