UPDATE: Multiple people are seriously injured in a single vehicle crash on State Highway 36.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Pyes Pa road at 4.35am.

A police spokesperson says the vehicle rolled critically injuring the driver.

"A passenger was seriously injured.

" The road is closed while the Serious Crash Unit examins the scene."

Diversions are in place.

EARLIER:

A serious incident on State Highway 36 has closed the road.

According to NZTA the road was closed at 4.53am between Joyce Rd and Pyes Pa Rd.

'Please follow detour and allow extra time for your journey.”

It's unknown at this stage when the road will reopen.
