In today's weather forecast we are expecting fine spells, a few showers, mainly from the afternoon, and northeasteries developing.

It's a one-clothing layer day today with a high of 23 and an overnight low of 17 degrees. Humidity is 79 per cent.

High tide is at 12noon and low tide at 6.20pm(Tay St). There's a sea swell of 0.4m and sea temperature is 20 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 8.35pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 5.30 and 7.30pm.

On this day in NZ history in 1929 we remember 'Black Saturday' in Samoa. New Zealand military police fired on Mau independence demonstrators in Apia, killing 11 Samoans, including the independence leader Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III.

On this day in world history in 1688 William of Orange made a triumphant march into London as James II fled. In 1694 George I of England got divorced.

In 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt stated, 'The definite policy of the United States, from now on, is one opposed to armed intervention.”

Today is the birthday of Mortimer J. Adler, American philosopher, educator and writer. Born in 1902 he once said 'The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live” and 'In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but how many can get through to you.”
