Tauranga Girls' College students are among the top innovators in the country, following a successful year in young enterprise.
The success of the school includes work put in by four Year 10 students, who have won third place in the nationwide BP Innovation Awards for their insightful creation ‘Quote That To Me'.
Tauranga Girls' College students Kamal Caur, Kaylah Burke, Emily McCarthy and Carmen Yang with the college's head of business Jude Maurice.
Quote That to Me is a game featuring 24 themed quotes to entertain children and young people while on a long distance car journey.
Tauranga Girls' College head of business studies Jude Maurice says the idea comes from the original brief supplied by the Young Enterprise Scheme.
The brief asked students to create a product that could be used to entertain young people in the car, but was not allowed to include any use of technology or communications.
'As the competition was sponsored by BP it had to be something that could entertain students while in the car. The girls were shortlisted to a group of ten before getting third.”
Jude says the girls put a lot of effort into researching various quotes, while also coming up with some original anecdotes including a range of humorous, serious and mind testing quotes.
The school's Year 13 student Drisana Sheely is also a top young innovator, after winning first prize in the New Zealand Young Enterprise exam run by AUT.
Dirsana bet out 3000 other students to win a fully paid three year scholarship to AUT and $1000 cash after gaining 96 per cent in the exam.
Principal Pauline Cowens says Drisana was initially intending to train as a pilot in the Air Force next year, but winning three years paid tuition at AUT has made her change her mind, and now she intends to study business and law at the university next year.
Pauline says the school has a 20 year profile in enterprise and the recent success shows the girls are becoming more innovative and creative through the business studies programme.
'We have had an amazing year for everyone involved in young enterprise. Even though we are so close to the end of the year the girls are still putting in the effort and doing great things and being creative in enterprise.”
Pauline says enterprise is the future of New Zealand and the girls going through the school will help to make their mark on the world.
