Bay building sector improves

The Bay of Plenty building industry is showing signs of improvement, according to the latest figures from the National Bank Regional Trends Survey.
Figures from the survey show the number of dwelling approvals in the region rose two per cent in the March quarter, in line with the national increase.

The number of commercial building consents increased 1.2 per cent, up on the national increase of -0.3 per cent.
Bay of Plenty Certified Building Association chairman, Allan Shaw, says the region's building industry has crept from its low period and is now "steady".
"It's still reasonably quiet, but we are still getting a lot of alteration work."
Allan is currently working on four alteration jobs.
Figures from the survey show several regions experienced modest gains in the number of dwelling approvals recorded.
The West Coast recorded the largest increase in dwelling approvals, up 20 per cent, and Otago recorded the biggest fall with a 7.1 per cent decrease.
