Six B grade contenders locked at the top

A crystal ball could be required to pick the winner of the Western Bay of Plenty Cricket B Grade First Round title, after an unprecedented six teams are locked at the top of the competition standings, after the opening three rounds.

Going into last weekend's matches, then competition leaders PapaOMA's, Papamoa Wanderers and Singh CC all tasted defeat, which has split the competition wide open.

Albion provided the biggest surprise last weekend, when they bounced back from ignominy in the first two rounds, to chase down 202 for the loss of just five wickets against Papamoa Tangaroa. Matt Somerville and Jarod Mason led the charge for victory and should be fired up for repeat performances against Cadets this Saturday November 10 2018.

Cadets also struck a rich vein of form last Saturday, when they posted a mammoth 294/8 and then provided B Grade new recruits PapaOMA's, with their first loss after bowling them out for 140. Andrew Carter (94) Tom Pamment (62) both hit half centuries on the way to Cadets impressive total.

Grasshoppers stretch back some four decades after an early association with the Greerton Club. While they sit in the unaccustomed position at the bottom of the points table, they could get their first points of the season against early ally Greerton at Mitchell Park.

Multiple B Grade titleholders Mount Maunganui square of with Papamoa Tangaroa, PapaOMA's meet Singh CC and Tauranga Boys College play Papamoa Wanderers on the grass at Fergusson Park.

Reserve Grade competition frontrunners Singh XI, have a date with the 2017/18 Reserve Grade champions Te Puke at the Te Puke Domain. The defending titleholders had a convincing win over Aquinas College in round three and are certain to provide the Indian side with a solid challenge.

Greerton host long-time rivals Mount Maunganui at Pemberton Park, Cadets are at home at the Tauranga Domain against Tauranga Boys College, with Aquinas College and R&A Sangha rounding out the Reserve Grade weekend encounters.
