UPDATE 5:48: Two vehicles have collided at the intersection of Bell Road and SH2 near Nukuhou in the Bay of Plenty.

Four people are injured and are currently being assessed by ambulance.

"Traffic is backing up and motorists are asked to avoid the area, until diversions can be put in place if able," says a police spokesperson.

EARLIER: A vehicle has crashed on the intersection of Bell Road and SH2 East Nukuhou, Whakatane.

Police were notified at 4.40pm that a car had gone through the intersection and crashed.

"Ambulance are on their way and police have just arrived at the scene," says a police spokesperson.
