A man who threatened to kill Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been given name suppression.

The 21-year-old Taupō man appeared at the Rotorua District Court on Thursday faced with one charge of threatening to kill Ardern.

The incident is said to have taken place on September 10.

Defence lawyer Wiremu Te Are successfully sought name suppression for his client, citing his recent engagement with mental health services.

The man did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody to reappear at Taupō District Court on November 1.
