Swimmer dies at Coromandel beach

Police say the man's death will be referred to the coroner. File photo.

A man has died after being pulled from the water of a popular Coromandel beach on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to Hot Water Beach just before 4pm.

It appears the man had been swimming when he got into difficulty, a police statement says.

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter was dispatched after reports a man in his 50s was struggling in the water.

He was pulled from the water and given CPR before the helicopter arrived, a spokesman said. However, rescuers were unable to revive him and he died at the scene.

The death will be referred to the coroner.
