MP says deterrent needed + VID

Tauranga MP Simon Bridges is voicing support for the need to crack down on domestic violence through tougher prison sentences for violent crime. The white ribbon appeal was held last week to raise money and awareness for the prevention of violence against women and children.

Simon Bridges says tougher laws on domestic violence will make a difference. See video interview below.

Last week, SunLive ran an opinion poll asking what people thought would have the greatest impact on reducing the amount of domestic violence crime in New Zealand. Possible answers were: More readily accessible drug and alcohol counselling; Larger salaries, wages and benefits for all NZers; Better access to anger management services, More education on the issue in schools; Tougher prison sentences for violent crime; Better healthcare access for mental illness sufferers.
The result was comprehensively in favour of tougher prison sentences with 44 per cent of people voting for it. Second was to have more education in schools at 28 per cent.
Simon says tougher laws on the issue will make a difference and that the current government has already made some changes which he believes will help.
