Mediation between the union representing some staff at Tauranga's courthouse and the Ministry of Justice has broken down, resulting in further strikes.
Members of the Public Service Association Union at the courthouse are joining other Ministry of Justice employees around the country in a nationwide strike.
PSA union members take new strike action outside Tauranga's courthouse after mediation with the Ministry of Justice broke down over the weekend.
Local members walked off the job on Monday at about 10am for two hours and held a rally outside the courthouse on Cameron Road.
Tauranga PSA union organiser Barry Jones says the union was offered a 'paltry sum” when the two parties began mediation talks late last week.
He says even then, not all ministry staff would qualify for the increase.
The PSA will not be rushing back into mediation with the ministry, says Barry.
Andrew Hampton, Ministry of Justice higher courts manager, says the ministry is extremely disappointed the PSA does not intend to put this offer to our staff to vote on.
'We are equally disappointed that our attempts at mediation have not resolved this dispute.”
'We cannot settle our collective agreement at any cost,” says Andrew.
While the ministry's new written offer has been rejected, the ministry is prepared to leave it open for acceptance until noon Friday, December 4, in case the PSA changes its mind.
