Bay hammer Harbour to make Jock Hobbs final

Kaleb Trask scored two tries and three conversions for a personal tally of 16 points in Wednesday’s semifinal win

Bay of Plenty rugby's all-conquering under 19s have stuck to their free-scoring guns and stormed into the final of the Jock Hobbs Memorial national tournament in Taupo.

They've beaten the highly-rated North Harbour side 68-12 to book themselves a place in Saturday's Graham Mourie Cup decider against Canterbury.

The result follows their 90-0 demolition of Hawkes Bay in the quarterfinal on Sunday. As in that match dynamic backs Lalomilo Lalomilo and Kaleb Trask were among the tries sharing four of the total of 10 the baby Steamers ran in.

By halftime the Bay had established a handy lead at 28-12, although as expected the power and physicality of the big North Harbour side kept them in the hunt. The second half was a different ballgame however as the blue and gold boys ran in 40 unanswered points to announce themselves as genuine title aspirants.

Bay of Plenty, who qualified for the tournament as Chiefs region top seeds with commanding wins over Counties Manukau, Waikato and Taranaki, will be shooting for their first Jock Hobbs Memorial Premiership title. Last year they finished fifth.

Canterbury, winners in 2015, defeated Wellington 39-22 to take their place in Saturday's final.

The match, which kicks off at 5pm at Taupo's Owen Delany Park, will be screened live on Sky Sport 4.
