New waterfront sandpit to open this Saturday

The sandpit is located next to the Hairy Maclary sculptures on Tauranga’s Waterfront.

Due to popular demand, a new sandpit is going to be open from Saturday on Tauranga's city centre waterfront for everyone to enjoy.

The sandpit area, down by the Hairy Maclary and Friends sculpture, will be an inviting open space for families to relax and enjoy while children can play in the sand.

The original sandpit was a temporary installation, but due to its popularity Tauranga City Council has designed a permanent sandpit and shade area that can remain for years to come.

'It will be a lovely space for families to use, especially the little ones – they will be entertained for hours,” says City Transformation Chair Larry Baldock.

Local law firm and Project Tauranga partner, Cooney Lees Morgan, is supporting the project by gifting a shade installation to the city as part of their 100th anniversary.

'It is fantastic to have a great company like Cooney Lees Morgan supporting our community spaces, and the new shade installation will be unique for Tauranga,” says Larry.

The new sandpit area will open on Saturday, 1 September.

Cooney Lees Morgan will be hosting a gathering down on the waterfront at 12.30pm, with music and a gold coin sausage sizzle with all proceeds going to Homes of Hope.
