Tougher security for airport

Improved security is on the radar for Tauranga Airport as the Government announces plans to beef-up airport security at smaller airports across the country.
The Ministry of Transport is working with airports to set up security committees to explore the options of how to enhance security at smaller airports.
Airports in New Plymouth, Hawke's Bay, Invercargill, Gisborne, Blenheim, Nelson and Tauranga are some of those identified.

The Government carried out a review on aviation security earlier this year and ruled out screening at small airports because it would be too costly. The hijacking of an Air New Zealand plane from Blenheim to Christchurch last year, which involved a Somali-born woman, sparked the review into improved airport security.
