Bella Vista homeowners ’left in limbo’

Tauranga City Council will meet in confidential today to discuss Bella Vista negotiations – more than 43 days after agreeing to buy the homes affected by the failed housing development.

An extraordinary meeting will be held in council chambers later this afternoon, says Tauranga City Council's weekly bulletin.

One of the homeowners caught up in the Bella Vista debacle says she's been left in limbo while they wait for a decision on compensation.

Last month, the Council agreed to compensate those who had bought homes in the Bella Vista development.

But Jenny Coffey, who had bought one of the dodgy homes, says compensation negotiations haven't started yet.

Council says it's not in a position to provide a timeframe on when the homeowners could hear more about what they might get.

It says every effort was being made to progress things as quickly as possible, but it's a complex matter and the council wanted to ensure it was done properly.

that council has public liabilty insurance ( as every business should have), therefore not requiring the ratepayer to stump up for this debacle.

Never mind all the strife the victims are going through, council must get the rules and regulations right! Why can’t they make an interim payment?

Any commentary

from council to those affected is better than none! And all ratepayers should be kept apace, seeing that we will be feeling it out of our pockets. 'It says every effort was being made to progress things as quickly as possible, but it’s a complex matter and the council wanted to ensure it was done properly'. It is council's shame that this stance was not taken years ago, on all aspects!

Enough is enough

It's time the Minister of Local Government appointed a Commissioner to run TCC. Enough incompetence has been shown, no more is needed.

Owners should share the burden

Let's not forget - the Developer is primarily responsible here - and he shouldn't be allowed to hide behind a Limited Company - Directors have personal responsibility to act properly. The Council offer seems fair - they are not without a share of the blame, but the Owners need to pony up too - they chose this Developer and were there as their houses were being built. They should expect to share part of the responsibility. Rather than suing the Council (we will end up paying) they should join the Council and chase down the Developer doing us all a favour.
